Pincode lookup

Once the directory is loaded, a six-digit pincode here shows every post office the Department of Posts directory lists under it, with its office type, delivery status, district, state, division, region and postal circle.

Search data has not been loaded yet. Searches start working once the official files are imported. Until then, entering a code still shows what each part of it means. What is pending.

Look up a pincode

Six digits, for example the pincode on a letter or a form.

Reading a pincode result

The directory has one row for each post office. When several offices share a pincode, all of them appear here, so the pincode alone does not tell you which office handles a particular street. The column names below are the ones the Department of Posts uses for this dataset (Source: Department of Posts).

Fields as named in the dataset, with what CodeKhoj shows for each.
Directory fieldWhat you see
Office NameThe post office's name, exactly as the directory spells it.
Office TypeThe type code the directory records for the office. We show it as published and do not reinterpret it.
DeliveryWhether the directory marks the office as a delivery office, again exactly as published.
Division Name, Region Name, Circle NameThe postal administrative units the office belongs to. A circle is the larger unit; the first two digits of a pincode point to a sub-region or postal circle (Source: Department of Posts).
District, State NameThe district and state recorded against the office. Use them to tell apart offices with the same name in different places.

When a pincode is not found

  • Check that all six digits are right. A pincode never starts with 0, and a change in the first three digits points to a different sorting district (Source: Department of Posts).
  • The directory is released monthly on the data portal (Source: data.gov.in). A brand-new pincode may be missing until the next import.
  • If you think the directory itself is wrong, the data.gov.in page for the dataset has a “Write to CDO” form that reaches the Department of Posts' Chief Data Officer. If CodeKhoj shows something different from the directory, tell us.
